History
Founded in 1981 by Yekatherina Yelanskaya. In late 1984 the reconstruction of the audience hall of the theater building, located in the «Hermitage» garden, was over. Theatre art director Ye. Yelanskaya, art director V. Soldatov and architect N. Golas managed to project and accomplish an idea of spherical theatrical space: an all-round amphitheater with a central ground. In repertoire they prefer fine literature – plays written by A. Ostrovsky, A. Chekhov, M. Bulgakov, N. Gumilyev, M. Tsvetaeva, B. Pasternak, Ch. Aitmatov, V. Nabokov, M. Zoshchenko, Antuan de Sent Exupery, Andrå Maurois, Fr.Sagan, Edw. Albee, Th. Williams, Harold Pinter, Johan August Strindberg, Henrik Johan Ibsen, M. Lermontov. The theatre is a participant of festivals in the USA ( «King, Queen, Knave» by V. Nabokov, 1995), Sweden ( «Erik XIV» by A.Strindberg, 1998). Went on tours to Russia as abroad as well, including South Korea ( «Doctor Zhivago» by B.Pasternak, 1994).
Situated in the Hermitage gardens, this theatre was built in a form of a circle where the stage is at the centre and the spectators are all around it. The idea of the sphere is to unite the actors and spectators, as if the people who come to see the play themselves become a part of the play. The plays are very musical; normally all of the actors play and sing as well. The Sphere also has its own orchestra. Repertoire includes plays adapted from literary works by Nabokov, Pasternak, Bulgakov and Saint-Exupery. |

Has been running its history since 1991
The Yuri Kuklachev Cat Theatre
This extraordinary theater, founded and run by clown Yuri Kuklachev, has become enormously popular in Moscow and abroad in the fifteen years of its existence. A family-run operation, the Cat Theatre has a company of over 120 cats (and four canines) who perform alongside human mimes in a variety of shows including The Nutcracker and Cats From Outer Space. Kuklachev says that cats cannot be trained — they will only do what they want to — and the performances have a pleasantly ramshackle feel, with the cats occasionally refusing to do what's expected of them, or deciding to do something completely different instead. That said, with no more than soft words and gentle hands, Kuklachev can coax his feline performers into doing some amazing tricks, including handstands and aerial acrobatics.
The performers are often rescued from the streets by Kuklachev, and he employs techniques similar to those used at the Durov Animal Theatre, spending long hours examining each cat's natural behaviour before developing tricks to incorporate this into a performance. Alongside the cat acts, there's a great deal of traditional clowning by Kuklachev and his cohorts, and a lot of audience participation.
There is, of course, a limit to the tricks even Kuklachev can make cats do, and the shows are occasionally a little repetitive. That said, these good-natured performances are guaranteed to delight young children, and have enough inventiveness and humour in them to keep adults entertained as well.
Address: 25, Kutuzovsky Prospekt, Moscow, 121151, Russia Transport: Kievskaya Metro Station Internet: www.moscowcatstheatre.com is a site devoted to the theatre's US tour in 2005, but has plenty of information about the theatre and some excellent clips.

For five years the group of actors and producers studied together, together they graduated from the institute and remained being a theatre, the official resolution about establishing of which was signed by the Mayor of Moscow in 1993. The theatre from the very beginning was established as an experimental one, with the troupe of which different theatre directors could accomplish their conceptions, reveal creative opportunities of actors to their maximum, master complicated space, and work in multifaceted stylistics. Besides P. N. Fomenko himself, performances have been staged by stage directors Sergey Zhenovach, Yugine Kamen’kovich, Ivan Popovsky, Nickolay Druchek, Mindaugas Karbauskis. The theatre keeps being refilled by master’s students. Today there are three generations of «the Fomenkos», who are former students of Fomenko workshop in the Russian Academy of the Theatre Arts and nowadays actors of his «Workshop», in the troupe. In 1997 by the Resolution of the Government of Moscow the premises, belonged earlier to the cinema «Kiev», were passed to the theatre. Address is as follows: Kutuzovsky Prospect, House 30/32. For a long time the theatre had to live a semi-underground life. In 1982 it was on the verge of closing after staging Ionesco's play «Rhinoceroses». Mikhail Zakharovich Levitin, People’s Artiste of the Russian Federation 699-10-51
|
|
History
Founded in 1987 on the basis of the Moscow Theatre of Miniatures by stage director and writer Mikhail Levitin as an author’s theatre. The connection of aesthetics of «Hermitage» with avant-garde traditions of the Russian art of 1920s is principal. Key productions are the following: «Kharms! Charms! Shardam! or the Clown School», «the White Sheep» by D.Kharms, «the Poor, or the Zand’s Death» by Yu. Olesha, «A night at a nuttery» by works of A. Vvedensky, N.Zabolotsky, N.Oleynikov. Such composers as Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Dashkevich, Yuly Kim, Andrey Semyenov and artists as David Borovsky, Boris Messerer, Garry Gummel collaborated with the theatre. It gives performances on tours both in Russian as abroad as well. Italian critic Vittorio Strada called the theatre of Levitin «an Absolute one» ( «the Evening Courier», March, 1990). In Switzerland «Hermitage» was awarded the title of «the Most exquisite theatre» (January, 1990). It is the Laureate of International theatrical forum «the Golden Knight».
Theater «Hermitage», which was founded by Michael Levitin, can be lawfully named the unique author’s theater, the theater of writer and producer, because its creator owns not only producer’s but bright writer’s talent. Michael Levitin is known for the wide audience first of all as talented theater producer, who talks with spectator on special language which is peculiar only to him. In some features this language is similar to the language of «oberiuts» — the group of writers who lived in 20s of XX century. The origins of Levitin’s creativity are laid in the time of Olesha and Babel, Oleynikov, Vvedensky and Harms. The plays which were staged after the compositions of these authors became the sensations of theatrical Moscow just when they appeared.

Moscow Academic Theatre of Satire (Moscow)
The history of the theatre goes back to the pre-revolutionary years, when it was the circus of the Nikitins brothers. Only in 1963 the building of the theatre was reconstructed and shaped more like a theatre rather than a circus.
The repertoire of the Satire Theatre attracts public of all tastes, all ages, all times and all nations. The best Russian actors embellish this stage: Alisa Freindlikh, Oleg Basilashvili, Alexander Shirvindt, Mikhail Derzhavin, Vera Vasilieva and many other splendid actors.
The most favored gem of the theatre is Spartak Mishulin's spectacle «The Kid and Carlson Who Lives on a Roof» after Astrid Lindgren's book.
During the break theatre-lovers might be interested to visit the Theatre Museum opened here from May 2002.

Romen Gipsy Theatre of Moscow Top Moscow Venues / Romen Gipsy Theatre. Moscow
Full name: Moscow Musical and Drama Gipsy Theatre «Romen» Foundation: 1931 Genres: Musical, operetta, drama, show ________________________________________ Romen Theatre in Moscow is the first and only regular repertoire Gipsy theatre in the world that opened its 78th season in fall, 2009. For the last 30 years its artistic director is professor Nikolay A. Slichenko, People's artist of the USSR, USSR State Prize winner, academic of International Theatre Academy. Fame of the Romen theatre spreads fare beyond the Moscow boundaries, and unique authentic art of talented ensemble is greeted with cheers around Russia, CIS and all around the world. It is just as loved and demanded as back in the 1930s when its history has just began.
Idea to create a Gipsy theatre occurred in Moscow intelligent circles in 1930 and was supported by A.Lunacharsky, not only because national and folk theatrical ensembles were being created all around Moscow and Russia at that time, but also because Russian literature, music and poetry is hard to imagine without gypsies ever since they arrived to Russia in the late XVII – early XVIII centuries. Lev Tolstoy wrote: «Gipsy Music was the only transition from folk to haute music in Russia». On January 24, 1931 first Gipsy studio was founded, and a month later it premiered the first performance, directed by M.Goldblat to the music by S.Bugachevsky, who laid the basis for musical culture of the future Romen theatre. He created the musical department of the theatre and directed it for over 37 years, and wrote music to over 30 productions. On December 16, 2010 Gipsy studio showed their first three-act musical and drama performance based on the play «Life on the Wheels» by Alexander Germano. After the premiere studio was given its present name: Gipsy theatre «Romen».
During World War II, artists of the Romen Theatre lived their lives along with the entire nation: they gave performances in hospitals and military camps, toured the front lines in the South and Far East. 1200 performances, over one million spectators and 700 special concerts at military industrial plants and battle ships – that was an impact of the Romen Theatre in the Great Patriotic War Victory. One of the soviet heavy bombers was built on money raised by the theatre, and was called «Romenovets».
It was during a hard post-war year of 1951 when news of the Gipsy theatre lead young Nikolay Slichenko to its doors. Having the mysterious artistic talent of the ancient people inside of him, Nikolay Slichenko developed and multiplied it in famous troupe of the unique Gipsy Theatre, where he went through all the stages of civil and creative growth during his 50+ year career with Romen Theatre: from supporting troupe artist to artistic director of the theatre. Nikolay Slichenko is a genius singer, stellar artist and talented conductor, who leads his theatre to the success for over 30 years now, developing its traditions of Gipsy art and artistic principles of his predecessors. Romen theatre today is a true center of Gipsy national culture for gypsies from all around the world. Despite approaching its 80th anniversary, Romen theatre is still young and hungry, it continues to create, reach new heights, proving its ability to achieve new horizons by the efforts of famous and strong spirited troupe
Today, the visiting card of the Romen Gipsy theatre of Moscow is «We, the Gypsies» performance staged by Nikolay Slchenko over 30 years ago. It was performed on stage for over 1500 times and still remains an ideal way of preserving the unique and authentic Gipsy culture. «We, the Gypsies» involves entire troupe of the Romen theatre. Besides that, Romen theatre today features 15 various performances from classics to modern drama. Some of them were just recently premiered, while others were staged long ago. Annually theatre presents new premieres, attracting its spectators by its brightness, musicality, national colors and special energetics of this amazing gipsy Romen theatre.

Founders are O.Yefremov, G.Volchek, I.Kvasha, L.Tolmacheva, Ye.Yevstigneev, and O.Tabakov. The very first production is «Alive forever» by V. Rozov (stage manager – O.Yefremov). Productions, reflecting realities and complications of the modern world, have always been, and remain the groundwork of its repertoire. Productions by works after V. Rozov, A. Volodin, Yevgeny Shwartz, Vl. Tendryakov, W. Gibson, Vas. Aksyenov, Ivan Goncharov, M.Gorky and others became a theatrical legend. After O. Yefremov left the theatre for MKhAT (the Moscow Art Theatre) in 1970, G. Volchek has been heading the troupe since 1972. Performance «Ascent of Mount Fuji» in her production (1973) proved the theatre remains faithful to its artistic and civil principles. M.Roshchin, A.Vampilov, A.Sokolova, V.Shukshin, A.Galin, and later on – N.Kolyada became its new authors. G. Volchek’s addressing the Russian and foreign classics such as plays after Anton Chekhov, Nick. Gogol, L. Andreev, Bernard Shaw, and others is principal. Performance «Abrupt Route» by Yevg. Ginsburg (production by G.Volchek, 1989), which received international recognition, marked a milestone. The theatre gives performances on tours actively both in Russia as abroad as well, touring New-Your City on Broadway in 1996 and1997 was of special significance.
Sovremennik was founded in 1956 by a group of young soul-mate actors who graduated from the school-studio of the Moscow Art Theatre.
The leaders of the group were Oleg Efremov, Galina Volchek, Evgeniy Evstigneyev, Oleg Tabakov, Igor Kvasha and Lilia Tolmacheva — now renowned classics of Russian scenic art.
From the very first years Sovremennik impressed the public with original stage productions. The repertoire was based on works by modern authors, such as Viktor Rozov, Alexander Volodin, Vasili Aksenov, William Gibson, etc.
The theatre has toured much and such spectacles as «Forever Alive», «Elder Sister», «The Two on a Seesaw», and «Always on Sale» have made real classics of theatre art.
From over one hundred spectacles staged here since the appearance of the theatre almost two thirds were written by authors for «Sovremennik» specially. The theatre has gained international fame and it is the only foreign theatre granted with «Drama Desk Award», the American national theatre prize.

History
Formed in 1927 on the basis of theatre «Al’kazar». It was opened by performance «Playing with the Joker» (staging – Ruben Simonov, Gr. Yaron). The very first success arrived after the first night of Isaak Dunaevsky’s operetta «Zhenikhi (Grooms)». In the theatre’s billposter along with recognized classicists such as Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauß, Imre Calman, Franz Lehár names of distinguished Soviet composers had appeared, such as Isaak Dunaevsky, Nick. Strel’nikov, Yuri Milyutin, Tikhon Khrennikov, Dm. Shostakovich, Dm. Kabalevsky, Boris Alexanderov, Konstantin Listov and others. Through different times the following artists starred at the theatre’s stage, such as: Gregory Yaron, T. Bach, Eudocia Lebedeva, Michail Kachalov, Alexey Feona, O. Vlasova, V. Alchevsky, V. Volodin, S. Anikeev, N. Ruban, Yu. Bogdanov, V. Bogachev, S. Alimpiev. There are following artists in the troupe now: T. Shmyga, Sv. Varguzova, Lilya Amarpfyi, Zh. Zherder, Yelena Zaitseva, Yelena Ionova, M. Koledova, I. Gulieva, Herard Vasiliev, Yuri Vedeneev, A. Markelov, V. Mishle, and others. Classical and modern operetta, musical, and show are there in the repertoire. Productions of the recent years, such as «Metro» (1999), «Notre Dame de Paris» (2002), «Romeo and Juliet» (2004), «Mowgli» (2005), «Monte Cristo» (2008) became events in the theatre’s life.

The Moscow Operetta Theatre
This theatre, which has been running since 1927 and has occupied this 19th century building since the sixties, traditionally staged the classics of light opera, concentrating on the works of Lehar, Strauss, and Kalman, alongside «Soviet operetta», a genre perhaps best forgotten. Nowadays the classics are performed alongside an increasing number of musicals. The first contemporary Russian musical, Metro, was premiered here, as was the Russian translation of the hugely popular Notre Dame de Paris, and this Western genre is becoming more and more popular. The leads in these productions are often taken by Russian pop stars. These newer productions, which are helping to fill the 1,600 seat auditorium with a younger audience, may help secure the future of the theatre. The building itself, which has been remodeled several times, is not in the best state of repair — although the sound and lighting equipment is relatively hi-tech — and there has been talk of complete reconstruction, possibly leaving the theatre without a home. This is a Moscow institution, but for visitors to the city it can only really be recommended to those with a burning passion for light musical theatre. |

About
Every theatre season is a journey into the unknown. No matter how well we plan it the outcome is always unpredictable because theatre means creativity, it is an endless road where each turn opens something new and unexpected.
In the new season we will continue what has been already started. We will turn to the ballet classics of our theatre and will show the famous La Esmeralda by Vladimir Burmeister, remembered and loved by many theatre-goers. We will revive The Taming of the Shrew by Dmitry Bryantsev. We will continue to work with Western choreography of the XX century. Long awaited in Russia, choreography by the master of contemporary dance Jiri Kylian will finally be presented on our stage.
Our opera company will keep on introducing spectators to works rarely heard in Russia and will open the season premiering Werther by Jules Massenet. We will also premiere La Forza del Destino by Giuseppe Verdi. Today’s repertoire includes only one opera by this great composer. La Forza del Destino is not as popular in Russia as La Traviata, though, as known, Giuseppe Verdi created it especially for Russia and it was premiered in Saint-Petersburg. And by contrast, the last but not the least opera opening will be a tremendously popular Gioachino Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. A wonderful production by Stanislavsky was part of the theatre’s repertoire for many decades. But time moves on and life is life. And we are taking a chance to make a new contemporary production Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
We will be very happy if you become frequent guests of our theatre to live through joys and sorrows together. We would like to see you among our friends, so we plan our season beforehand. We also hope that despite all difficulties of today you will also find time in your plans to make the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre a significant part of your life.
