«Intrigue and Love“

Great tragedy of the German romanticism – “ Intrigue and Love» — captivated Roman Viktyuk for the first time ever in 1969 (the Kaliningrad Theater of a Young Spectator), keeping in mind that the performance was dedicated to the Lenin Komsomol jubilee. It goes without saying, that the stage manager has not turned round his irony, which is typical for him, while a performance was full of passion and sympathy towards young heroes, struggling for their love. Schiller of the example of 2011 is an absolutely new version, tough and modern, full of indeterminable contradictions and tragic suspicions, which the ХХth century was generous to. That is why the genre of the performance is determined as «the assize».

…Young Luise is in love with aristocrat Ferdinand. It is evident, that this is an unequal match. Father of an enamored President von Walter is ready to bet the whole wad to baffle him. While the president’s secretary, whose last name is Wurm (in translation from German is a worm) is weaving his own plot.

Roman Viktyuk saturates his performance with cultural parallels and associations, plays with theatrical styles, snipes – but all this for the love of making a spectator think about the irrationality of man’s existence outside of love, outside of his nature in order to please socium phantoms. In his stage revelations Viktyuk is ruthless and truthful, but permanently theatrical and bright. And it clears up, that «Intrigue and Love» is a very modern play – about nowadays and about those, who dares to love come hell or high water.
